Community Guidelines
These Community Guidelines are intended to create a respectful environment. Violating these guidelines can result in the removal of your comment and/or a temporary or permanent ban from posting comments.
- Post in Good Faith. Discussions on The Atlantic should be enlightening, educational, entertaining, surprising, wide-ranging, and respectful. Comments should be productive and advance the conversation. Please report comments that may violate our guidelines.
- Be Respectful. Discussions can be a place for criticism of The Atlantic's journalism and disagreement among commenters, but we do not accept personal attacks, bullying, doxxing, or harassment. We also do not tolerate hate speech or disparaging name-calling.
- Recommend Ideas. Reply to other comments and use the “Recommend” button to upvote those that you think other people should read, too.
- No Spamming. Arguments should be germane to the subject of the article. Using comments to sell or market products or services is prohibited. Do not submit comments that include inappropriate content or promote illegal activities.
Moderation Guidelines
- Comments may be moderated to ensure they align with the Community Guidelines. If you don’t see your comment in a Discussion immediately, it may be because it has been flagged and needs further review.
- If your comment violates the Community Guidelines or is otherwise inappropriate, it will not appear within a Discussion.
- Users can be temporarily or permanently banned for egregious misconduct or repeated violations of our Community Guidelines. You will be notified of the ban the next time you attempt to comment.
- If your comment has been rejected or deleted, or if you’ve been banned, you may appeal our moderation decision. All decisions following an appeal are final.
- Commenting may occasionally be disabled on certain stories. Comments that appear in Discussions are not necessarily endorsed by The Atlantic. We take no responsibility for and we do not expressly or implicitly support or guarantee the completeness, truthfulness, accuracy, or reliability of any contributions to these conversations.
